PROBLEMS
Common phone battery problems and how to solve them
A battery problem isn’t always a battery fault. Work through the checks below first. If they don’t help, bring the phone in and we’ll test it.
Usually it’s a background app, a power-hungry setting, or a worn battery. Check Settings > Battery (iPhone and Samsung) for an app using far more than the rest, lower brightness, then restart and update. If it still drains fast and battery health is low, the battery is worn.
Bring it in when: drain stays fast after a restart and update, or battery health is near or under 80%.
A worn battery can’t hold steady voltage when the phone needs a burst of power (camera, video calls, cold weather), so the phone switches off to protect itself. A restart won’t fix it. Back up your phone if this happens often.
Bring it in when: it switches off with charge showing more than once a week.
iPhone: Settings > Battery > Battery Health (& Charging) shows Maximum Capacity. Apple designs iPhone 14 and earlier to keep about 80% capacity at 500 cycles, and iPhone 15 models at about 1,000 cycles. Samsung: Settings > Battery > Battery information on newer models, or the battery test in the Samsung Members app (varies by model and region).
Bring it in when: iPhone shows “Service” or about 80% or lower, or Samsung’s test flags a problem.
Very likely — a swollen battery. Unplug it, switch it off, and keep it on a hard, cool surface. Don’t press, puncture or try to remove it, and check airline rules before flying. See our warning signs of a swollen battery.
Bring it in when: straight away. Call us first.
Mild warmth is normal. Too hot to hold is not. Remove the case, don’t use it while charging, try a certified cable and adapter, and keep it out of the sun. Hot while idle or a chemical smell? Stop charging.
Bring it in when: it’s hot when idle or with a different charger.
Test the cable and adapter on another phone first. Charging only at an angle or a loose plug points to the port. Steady charging but a jumping percentage points to the battery. More checks: why a phone charges slowly.
Bring it in when: a known-good cable and charger don’t fix it.
Partly. Batteries give less power in the cold, so a sudden drop on a chilly morning can be normal if battery health is good. If it also shuts down on mild days, the battery is worn.
Bring it in when: shutdowns happen at room temperature.
Habits that actually help battery life
- Avoid heat and charging under pillows.
- Use certified chargers and cables.
- Turn on Optimised Battery Charging (iPhone) or battery protection (Samsung, where available).
- Keep software updated.
Symptom, likely cause and fix — at a glance
| Symptom | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Drains fast, health above 85% | App or setting | Check battery usage, restart, update |
| Shuts down at 20–30% | Worn battery | Battery replacement |
| Screen lifting or back bulging | Swollen battery | Stop charging; replace promptly |
| Charges only at an angle | Charging port or cable | Clean or repair the port |
| Hot when idle | Battery or internal fault | Test in store |
| Dies in cold only, health good | Normal cold behaviour | Keep phone warm |
Original vs aftermarket batteries, explained honestly
We fit quality-tested replacement batteries and check each one before fitting. We’ll tell you which battery your model gets before we start.
iPhone note: on iPhone XR, XS and later, a non-Apple battery shows as “Unknown Part” in Settings > General > About, and Apple says battery health may not read accurately. The phone still works normally. If you want “Genuine” shown, Apple and Apple-authorised providers can fit a genuine Apple battery. Samsung and Android phones don’t show this message.
Warranty: 3 months on the battery and the work. Keep your receipt as proof of purchase.
What a battery replacement involves
- Test. We check the battery, charging port and cable.
- Quote. Price and time before any work; no fix, no fee.
- Replace. The new battery is fitted and connected.
- Re-seal. A new adhesive seal goes on where the design uses one.
- Check. We test charging and the battery reading before handover.
Water resistance: we can’t promise factory water resistance after any opened repair, so keep it away from water.
Your data: a battery swap doesn’t normally affect your data, but back up first.
Time: about 20–30 minutes for many common models when the battery is in stock.

Is a new battery worth it, or should you upgrade?
A battery replacement is usually worth it when the rest of the phone is fine — screen intact, storage big enough, and the phone still gets software updates. In that case a new battery brings back a full day of use for far less than a new handset. It’s harder to justify when the phone has several faults at once, no longer gets security updates, or the quote is close to what the phone is worth. We’ll tell you plainly if we think your money is better spent elsewhere.

EXCELLENT Based on 168 reviews Posted on Charlotte FootTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Ash was able to fix a very complex and complicated issue with my iPhone. I highly recommend this place 100% with your iPhone problems and it is very reasonably pricedPosted on Natale DCTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Went in to change my phone screen protector and had a great experience. The guy was super friendly, did it really fast, and the price was cheap too. Definitely recommend 👍Posted on FinnTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This man is absolutely phenomenal best technician ever honestly I only wish amazing things on this repair store absolutely incredible this man has fixed my screens twicePosted on J GTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. If you’re too young to remember what a proper honest businessman is like then I’d recommend just going to meet Meher even if you don’t require his services. He is not only the best technically at fixing things that I’ve ever seen, he is genuinely a kind, caring and honest man. He doesn’t look to take advantage of anyone with his prices he only looks to have a sustainable business model which is built on honesty with his customers. He fixed my iPhone 13 mini screen 3 times - he didn’t charge me for the third time because he said I’d been a loyal customer after buying a case and a screen protector of him previously. I wouldn’t go anywhere else in Sydney for a gadget repair. One of the rare ones still left who isn’t trying to metaphorically have your pants down with an overpriced and dodgy service. Thanks again Meher!Posted on Amanda FarmerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fixed my iphone17 screen much cheaper than I was quoted elsewhere and FAST! Recommended 👍Posted on BrandonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Super friendly guy gave me a great discount on my screen repair. Would highly recommend.Posted on Jessica PooleTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My phone screen smashed. They fixed it in 45 minutes. Very happy with the service. Shop owner was very kind and helpful. 10/10 service. Would recommend this place.Posted on Oisín LaniganTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great guy! Fast and affordable.
FAQ's
Is there a phone battery replacement shop in Eastlakes itself?
Smartfone doesn’t have a store in Eastlakes NSW 2018. Our only store is at 102 Belmore Road, Randwick, about 6 km away by road or roughly 11 minutes on the 358 bus from Gardeners Road. Call 0470 505 835 first and we’ll confirm your battery is in stock.
How long does a battery replacement take?
Many common iPhone and Samsung models take about 20–30 minutes while you wait, if the battery is in stock. Less common models or folding phones can take longer or need a part ordered. Call with your model and we’ll give you a realistic time.
How much does a phone battery replacement cost? It depends on your phone’s make and model, so we quote after checking it. The quote is free and given before any work, and if we can’t fix the phone you don’t pay. Call 0470 505 835 with your model for a price before you travel.
Will I lose my data?
A battery replacement doesn’t normally affect photos, apps or messages, because only the battery is changed. We still recommend backing up to iCloud, Google or Samsung Cloud first, as a failing battery can switch the phone off unexpectedly.
Will my phone still be water resistant?
We fit a new adhesive seal where the design uses one, but no shop can promise factory water resistance after a phone has been opened. Treat it as no longer water resistant and keep it away from water.
Will my iPhone show a “non-genuine battery” message?
On iPhone XR, XS and later, a battery that isn’t a genuine Apple part appears as “Unknown Part” in Settings > General > About, and battery health may not read accurately. The phone works normally. We explain this before starting so you can choose.
Is it worth replacing the battery on an older phone?
Yes, if the screen and storage are fine and it still gets software updates — a new battery usually restores a full day of use for much less than a new phone. If it has several faults or no longer gets updates, we’ll tell you honestly.
